If you've been watching Fox lately (I'd like to meet a person who proudly watches Fox btw) you have most likely noticed the new advertisements for the confusing Terminator SC Chronicles and the new Joss Whedon creation, Dollhouse. Fox has decided to target male sci fi geek audiences by promising hot girls who will speak to the camera during commercial breaks like the girls in the 1-900 "Pick up the phone" ads.
I did watch Dollhouse's premiere last night. As a long time Joss Whedon fan I've never missed a premiere episode of one of his shows (yes I have the pleasure I proclaiming that I witnessed the first episode of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly, and now Dollhouse!). While I don't enjoy Joss' work with Fox nearly as much as the work he did with the WB and UPN, it wasnt a bad first episode.
Here is the basic premise of Dollhouse: "Dolls" (people with not much left to contribute to society) have had their personalities wiped clean so they can be imprinted with any number of new personas, including memory, muscle memory, skills, and language, for different assignments. They're then hired out for particular jobs, crimes, fantasies, and occasional good deeds. On missions, Actives are monitored internally (and remotely) by Handlers. In between tasks, they are mind-wiped into a child-like state and live in a futuristic dormitory, a hidden facility nicknamed "The Dollhouse". The story follows Echo, who begins, in her mind-wiped state, to become self-aware
So far Joss Whedon has never had a high ratings hit off the bat. Buffy was a mid season replacement that was almost not brought back after so-so first season ratings. Angel fared better as it was a spin off of a WB success. Firefly was cancelled after 1 or 2 seasons but spawned a blockbuster film, Serenity, after cancellation. Who knows where Dollhouse will end up but I won't damn it to Sci Fi channel syndication just yet!
